OVERVIEW: At the conclusion of this program component, participants will have a better linguistic awareness as they exchange information with others. In language, participants will explore the differences between the verifiability of reporting, inferences (conclusions about the unknown, based on the known) and judgments (expressions of approval or disapproval of occurrences, persons or objects). Developing linguistic awareness will aid participants in eliminating bias in their own communication and help in the facilitation of conflict resolution and problem solving with others.
Effective communication will assist participants in demonstrating better listening, questioning and nonverbal skills. The use of shared language and tactical simplicity will enhance the persuasiveness and influence of participants over others.
DURATION: Half-day, full day or extended multiple-day workshops
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Understand the distinctions between reports, inferences & judgements.
- Discover one's biases and develop impartiality.
- Identify the level and style of shared language.
- Use tact and discretionary communication (direct/indirect language).
- Incorporate tactical simplicity.
- Adopt listening and respectful communication skills.
FORMAT: This workshop is designed to be highly participatory and interactive. Certain key concepts, which will be used through the workshop experience, will be presented and discussed initially. Using a "practice and feedback" loop approach, participants will gain an understanding of the processes of effective communication, and how these components can be modified for maximum results.
